August Presentation

COVER-PALOOSA :

Presenter: Len Miller, TSC Historian

President Steve Gross Called the meeting to order at 11:00 AM with 19 members in attendace.

Business: There was a quiz with prizes.

Steve discussed a TV commercial for Jardiance with Usain Bolt, showing him collecting stamps.

Website Report: We continue to have a good deal of visitors, mostly from the United States, but also a number from Germany and India.

Secretary's Report: The newsletter is being sent out monthly by email and anyone not receiving it should contact the Secretary.

Presentation: COVER-PALOOZA - Exceptional Covers & Postcards Contest

Over fifteen categories were offered including Largest Cover, Smallest Cover, Cover That Traveled The Longest Distance, and many more.

The winners selected from a group of excellent Philatelic items that were provided by Len Miller.

The TSC October 17 Meeting Presentation will be "Hand Carved Art on Stamps & Covers" by Edward W. Ejk.

Baseball On Stamps & Covers :

Special Guest Presenter: Pat Darcy Worlds Series Pitcher

Cinn. Reds 1976-1977

President Steve Gross Called the meeting to order at 10:00 AM with 24 members in attendance.

Business: The website had 194 new hits, mostly from the U.S. but a nice representation from Germany. The monthly meeting minutes are now posted on the website. A new link on the website is dedicated to Baseball on Stamps & much more baseball related information.

A baseball themed trivia contest was held with the winners receiving vintage Topps Baseball Coins. Here a few of the trivia questions:

How many U.S. Stamps feature a baseball theme? 66
How many Stamps featuring Baseball have been issued worldwide? Over 7,000
What was the first country to issue a Baseball themed Stamp? Philippines

Presentation: Vice President Richard Wood introduced our guest speaker at at the gym, and they started having lunch together. At one point Richard noticed Pat's ring and it was a World Series Championship ring and exclaimed "You're famous!"

Pat Darcy was born in Ohio and moved to Tucson in his youth. He played Baseball in High School and Community College as a pitcher. Upon signing a prefessional baseball contract by the Houston Astros and played minor league baseball for them and for the Cincinnati Reds after a trade for Denis Menke. He made the Cinn. Reds major league roster in 1976 and won the MLB World Series in 1976 & 1977 playing with Hall of Famers sparky Anderson, Johnny Bench, Joe Morgan, Tony Perez and All - Time Hit King Pete Rose.

Following his professional baseball career, Pat returned to Tuicson where he had a successful career in real estate while also coahing baseball and softball teams. Pat was inducted into the Pima County Sports Hall of Fame in 1995.

Pat discussed his career and added many interesting and amusing anecdotes that were enjoyed by the club member who asked Pat a number of questions about his professional baseball experience.

Also on display were several tables of Baseball Stamps & Covers as well as Baseball Memorabilia including Autographs, Photos, Vintage Programs and an Antique tabletop Baseball game that is pictured on the left showing Pat at bat.

Political Change Mirrored in Postage Stamps: The Example of British Malaya/Borneo by Ernie M.

President Steve Gross Called the meeting to order at 10:55 AM with 26 members and 4 guests in attendance.

Business: The meeting started with a stamp trivia contest with prizes awarded for the contest

New member Dr. Greg P. was introduced and his stamp collecting interests are Medicine and the American Revolution on U.S. and World Wide stamps

August meeting topic will be Baseball on Stamps and Covers with the guest presenter Pat Darcy World Series champion pitcher for the Cinn. Reds.

Hand Colored First Day Cover manufacturer Fred Collins has passed away and the company is closing and will be selling off any remaining inventory.

By the late 1800's the areas collectively known as British Malaya and British Borneo consisted of 17 semi-autonomous political entities under varying degrees of British control. Most of them issued postage stamps. By 1965, the 17 had evolved into two primary entities: the independent republic of Singapore and the independent nation, Malaysia, organized as a federal constitutional monarchy. Currently, Singapore and Malaysia both issue postage stamps. In addition, the 13 states of Malaysia also issue their own postage stamps.

To further complicate matters, between the late 1800's and 1965, other stamps used in the area were issued by the British East India Company, the Straits Settlements, the Federated Malay States, Japan, Thailand, the British Military Administration and the Federation of Malaya.
